Top 10 Reasons To Do A Triathlon
This blog has moved to: http://blog.villagecycle.com/2012/07/top-10-reasons-to-do-a-triathlon/
Top ten reasons to do a triathlon
Top ten reasons to do a triathlon
Or,
why in the world am I working out when it’s so crazy hot out?
On
Sunday August 26, 2012 I’m planning on doing the Life Time Chicago sprint distance
triathlon (that's a .47 mile swim, 13.64 mile bike, 3.1 mile run). Given the sweaty weather that’s settled in
Chicago (thanks climate change!), I’ve been thinking about why I decided to do
this triathlon and, in turn, why others I know have decided it’s a good idea to
work out in the summer heat. I asked six of my triathlon-accomplished friends
why they had decided to do their first triathlons and this is what they said –
both their serious as my soul answers, and the ones that aimed to get a laugh.
Top Ten
Reasons to do a Triathlon:
10. You thrive on being one step away from dehydration: Triathlon training in
9. You need something to brag about at work: While in the work elevator, you suddenly find yourself
non-chalantly saying, “oh yeah, you know the lake is really cold this time of
year, I did swim like a million miles
this morning for my TRIATHLON
training, oh, did I tell you I’m doing a TRIATHLON?”
Do they need to know it’s only a sprint distance, which is no Ironman (2.4-mile
(3.86 km) swim, a
112-mile (180.25 km) bike and a marathon 26.2-mile (42.2 km) run) and that the training is actually not that much time?
No.
8. Because your sister is doing one. My sister Mary and I trained and did our first triathlon
together. Now, six years later, we’re doing another one, this time with one of our other sisters, Caitlin. Even though all three
of us live in different states, we can talk about training and provides both camaraderie
as well as a little healthy competition.
7. You’re going through a mid-life crisis: Apparently for some, who will remain nameless, this can
come (came) as early as age 30. Triathlons provide an achievable goals; it
give you a chance to excel in things you’re good at while challenging you in
areas you’re not. And, it’s much cheaper than a
fancy car (and it can give you an excuse to get a souped up bike).
6. You’re preparing for peak oil: Despite Washington ’s
inability to tackle issues like climate change and the impending scarcity of
fossil fuels, you understand that at some point, the way we get around is going
to have to fundamentally change. So, you say, I could buy some land, learn to
farm, and start building simple machines, OR I could learn to swim, run, and
bike in case I need to make a quick getaway to Canada to get out of the heat.
4. You want to learn how to run/swim/or long distance
bike. A triathlon will teach you how to
do all of those and it helps work a variety of muscles so that you’re less
prone to injuries.
3. You need motivation to work out: Maybe when it’s literally a hundred degrees out you
don’t usually say to yourself, “why, I should run four miles and then swim one
just for the heck of it”. Triathlon training programs are generally 6-12 weeks
long and give you a range of exercises, which helps you not get bored with
them.
2. You want to know what it feels like to finish one: Did you grow up watching the Olympics and assume that
some day you would win a silver metal? (that’s right, I was realistic enough to
know I wouldn’t win the gold in gymnastics, a sport I’d never actually tried in
my life) Or maybe watch a lot of the Mighty Ducks when you were little? The
triathlon could be your adult version of athletic success that you always
dreamed you’d have.
1. You need something to do. Triathlons and
training for them will definitely give some structure to your summer as well as
some tone to your limbs. It helps you challenge yourself; it’s a test of
individual endurance since you race only against yourself. Sure, you may race
someone on a particular leg of the race, but in the end, you’re the only one
you’re really competing with.
There are about six
weeks between now and the Aug 26th sprint in case any one wants to
join us!

Lizard Skin DSP Tape - Review by llama
So it has been over a year since I installed my first roll of Lizard Skin DSP tape, and I couldn't be more please with a bar tape. After a season of racing cross along with training and fun rides, the tape has held up and continued to perform.
This tape grabs better than any I have ever used as well as feels good under your hands. It has been through mud, rain, dirt, snow, repeated cleanings, and is still holding up where I wouldn't replace it yet.
The only two wear spots are on top by the hoods, though compared to my previous tape, the Lizard Skin DSP has held tough and lasted much longer. After using the tape on my cross bike, I replaced the tape on all my other drop bar bikes. Even though it is twice the price, the Lizard Skin DSP out sells our brands 2 to 1, in store and online.

Moved to the city this past summer and knew right away that I wanted to get a bike. Once the finances got settled, not knowing anything about bikes or riding in the city, I hit up the closest bike shop I knew - Village Cycle. Walking into the shop, I had the same feeling as when I first walked into a running store - out. of. place. I had no idea where to begin. Luckily for me, Bill was watching out for wanderers such as myself, and he took me under his wing. He asked me a lot of good, defining questions which helped him to be able to show me bikes that fit my needs (mainly commuting, exercise). He spent a good hour with me that first day, and when I told him that I wasn't ready to buy that day, he told me it was no big deal and ensured me he just loved helping beginners out. Unlike other sales peeps who do everything in their power to keep you from leaving without a sale, Bill asked for my name, gave me his card and shook my hand goodbye.
A week later, after doing some extra homework, I returned, found Bill, and bought a Trek 7.3FX. It was one of the bikes Bill had shown me the week before and, after doing some checking up on some online reviews, I knew it was an excellent bike for the price (2011 model at 20% off). Bill answered all the rest of my questions and spent another hour or so with me. All the time he was patient with dumb questions and excited to get me on my new ride!
Since the bike had to be built, I returned a couple days later and picked my bike up! The service guys were cool and showed me all the essentials. After waiting for a bit (not the store's fault, the registers were down) I was finally off on the road.
Though still getting to know the bike and city riding, I love the 7.3! It's super light, fast, quiet and smooth. The seat is a bit hard, but, overall, the bike is outstanding! I can't wait to get it out for longer rides and explore parts of the city I haven't gotten to explore yet!
Thanks Bill and Village Cycle! Well done!

Apparently this is the biggest bike shoppe in the world. The floor isn't huge but they own all five floors of the building or something like that and have every bike every made ever in the world ever. I went here with my dad who is 6"5 and Evan took a lot of time finding and fitting a bike that would help him recover from double knee replacement. The staff are always giggling about something and at any given moment there are several attractive people walking around in bike shorts. In all, seems like a pretty great work environment. It's nice to have people openly and honestly talk to you about which bike seat is best for your "ahem, perineum" who really enjoy what they are doing. Nothing worse than straddling a roadie while a disgruntled bike shop employee "checks your angles", am I right? This is a good joint.

Thwarting Bicycle Thievery!

First you will need the right equipment.
Know that nothing is theft proof, any lock is merely a deterrent to a determined thief. The trick is to layer these deterrents to the point that this sleazy bike snatcher will gaze upon your bike, shake his fists in utter frustration at the skies, and slink away into the shadows in search of more vulnerable prey. There are several prominent lock manufacturers to choose from, each with a selection of locks ranging from the wimpiest combination cable locks to massively impressive 15-pound chain and shackle. I suggest looking towards the middle-ground, find something that provides adequate security, yet also something that you are actually going to carry with you, without enduring great burden or discomfort.
For day to day commuting I carry a kryptonite evo mini, supplemented by a steel braided cable. Neither is too cumbersome, and something I can comfortably carry in my bag everyday. I’ll secure my rear wheel and frame with my u-lock (two most valuable components of the bike to replace) and run the cable through the front wheel.

You may have the right tackle, but such equipment is useless without correct implementation of your devices of anti-thievery. Let's talk tactics and stratagem.
It would be nice if you could carry all these items everyday, but the fact is in the real world we aren’t always prepared for the unexpected. From unplanned stops to unfamiliar destinations, or just simply forgetting to load your gear. Even in such worst case scenarios, they are solutions. Depending on where you are headed try bringing your bike in with you. If that's not an option, time to get resourceful. Start by selectively choosing your lock up spot. Make it practice to lock only to bike racks and the few remaining parking meters. Street signs are held in place with a single bolt and nut that can be removed with ease, most already have been booby-trapped in such a manner. You lock your bike the bike burglar comes out, lifts the pole and effectively snags your bike. Just check the bolt, if it is rusted solid or hammered down it may be acceptable. Skinny sidewalk trees can be cut in half in a manner of minutes as well as wooden porch railings. Chain-link fences are also shunned! If it means walking a block or crossing the street to find a spot, do it. Now that you’ve found a spot, inspect it. Give it kick or a shake, to see if any coconuts fall out. Some racks will have a collection of cut u locks piling up at it’s base, or a few skeletons of fallen bikes that have been ravenously stripped down to frame and bones. It’s a bike theft breeding ground, move along. Find a stand alone bike rack, in plain view, on a busy sidewalk, a thief may think twice about crowds of people walking by watching him do his dirty deeds. I’d also caution to steer clear of long collections of bike racks that you’ll find outside of college campuses, museums, and train stations. When those things are full no one will think twice about someone bent over pulling on a bike in that tangled mess. Wheels disappear frequently from such locations.
If there simply isn't an open spot, usually outside locations of grand interest, and you're traveling with a companion, try out this technique, the bike totem. Or in this case an abandoned bike hogging up premium parking. Hoisting your bike up may garner more attention, but it also lessens the leverage any larcenist may have with their tools of plunder. Do not attempt this to a strangers bike, they will perceive it you asserting bicycle dominance, and may result turmoil.
Don't drive yourself crazy worrying about your bike getting stolen, it will only detract from the joy of cycling. Rather be prepared, take proper precaution, and be smart about it. Okay?

Review by Sara D. on Yelp
I had an amazing experience at Village Cycle. I worked with a salesman named Joel. He asked a number of questions about what I would be using my bike for, where I lived, what kind of trails/roads i would be riding on, etc. he kept my choices within my price range, and gave me exactly what I was looking for. The coupon on yelp was easy to use, and the woman at the register was very familiar with it, which made checkout fast and easy. After the bike was built, the guys in the back answered questions I didn't even know I had. They made sure I knew the bike inside and out before I left. I was very happy with my experiences with the entire staff, and would definitely send my friends there.

Pretty. Fast. Womens Race Mechanics Workshop at Village Cycle Center
On Saturday the 11th, we were lucky enough and very proud to host a women's race mechanics workshop with Pretty. Fast.
We had four workstations set up around the shop each with it's designated topic of discussion and hands on demonstration. The four stations included pre race, during race, post race mechanics and maintenance, as well as one dedicated to tires, tools, and the new SRAM Red, which was helicoptered in, and tactically escorted in it's ballistic casing. interrupted only by the crashing tranquility emanating from our revered gong which signaled it was time to rotate. Cardboard treasure chest brimming with precious bicycle goods to be raffled off which included priceless gems from Gore Bike Wear, Park Tool, and Blackburn Design.
Great turnout, ample volunteers, lots of participation, and a surplus of knowledge. Everyone had fun, and learned quite a bit in the process.
"Thanks for hosting the Pretty. Fast. Women's Cycling Clinic on Saturday! I learned a ton and it was far the best clinic I have attended." - Deanna Doohaluk via Facebook

Giro Reverb Now In Stock!
Giro Reverb. Stylish and Affordable. |
Now in stock at Village Cycle Center, the Giro Reverb!
Retro styling with modern day comfort. Built in removable visor is nice for sun or rain.
Here is what Giro says:
"A classic take on cycling style for today's urban environment. The Reverb's compact, classic lines are a perfect match to the clean new style that is driving urban cycling. The light-yet-tough In-mold shell wraps around to the inside of the helmet to resist dents and dings from life on the streets, and a self-adjusting fit system eliminates the need to dial-in the fit when wearing a cycling or winter caps. The finishing touch is a simple, removable cycling cap-style visor that adds a touch of style without compromising cooling ventilation in changing weather."
Availability: In Village Cycle Center Now!
